The classic wiggle dress is what you might call a bodycon or pencil dress now, but it’s a classic style with a fun name! Patterns for Pirates has just released the Wiggle Dress, and It. Is. Everything. The options in this pattern are almost endless. I love the boatneck, it’s my preferred neckline, and I don’t see tons of patterns with it. You will feel amazing wearing this!
A stable fabric, liverpool, ponte, scuba, or similar, will work best. You will also want to wear shape wear underneath 🙂 🙂 This is form-fitting by nature, and the extra smoothing will help everyone. I grew up in show choir and theater, where we were hyper sensitive to lumps and bumps showing on stage, and so I’ve been a shape wear proponent for a long time. 🙂 Even though I prefer going through life wearing XXL sweatshirts, and joggers, or running shorts, I love wearing this pattern.
The options include short, half, 3/4, or long sleeves, high or low back, crop, top, above knee, below knee, midi, and floor lengths. Optional zipper, and back kick pleat for the below knee and midi lengths. And I know there are a bunch of hacks already on the P4P blog.
The bust, waist, and hip lines are marked, so you will know exactly where to adjust for your body. The seam down the center back gives you another easy place to make adjustments. This one fits me well with no adjustments, except for adding 1″ of length for my height. My waist and bust are normally in the same place as on the pattern, and I have to add length below my waist, that was true for this pattern too.
You can get it on sale for $7.50 through November 1st. Since Patterns for Pirates has had their last site-wide sale of the year, this will be the best deal for a while at least! I think it’s a great bargain with all the options included, and for how amazing you will feel while wearing it. It can go from casual in a knee length, elbow sleeve, striped ponte, with sandals or sneakers, to mega-glam in a fancy fabric with the off the shoulder, mermaid maxi length.
Oh, I almost forgot I was going to mention that this does NOT take much fabric! Of course, haha, but it was a nice surprise to be able to sew an adult pattern that isn’t a fabric hog. It’s also a simple and fast sew. I have already ordered fabric for my next version. I ❤ everything about this pattern!
